Today is one of those very special days when we are so privileged to visit the historic ruins of 'the things that you read in the Bible' and it was totally awesome. Our very informative guide, Yelda, was an encyclopaedia of knowledge, easy and interesting to listen to.
Our small group arrived at the top of ancient Ephesus and walked downhill through the incredible ruins of life past, with every few steps of the way telling a story of the way they lived – which was much like today in many, many ways… the core of life - home, family, religion, business, wealth, poverty, disease, etc…. except for their massive marble and stone dwellings – does not compare with our meagre homes and structures we build these day.
We were lucky to explore the Terrace Houses – homes of the wealthy Romans - which have been newly excavated over the last 10 years or so, and they have to be seen to be believed – perhaps the photos might help to describe. After exiting this site and descending many, many steps and right before our eyes was 'The Library', not unlike 'The Treasury' in Petra – totally amazing!!!!
Our next visit was to a very special place, 'Mary's House' – it is thought to be the site of the final resting place of the Virgin Mary and outside this modest brick building was a 'prayer/wishing wall' with millions of little pieces of paper poked into every crevice – every single one no doubt telling a story!!!.......
Yelda then asked us if we wanted to eat at one of the local restaurants and of course the answer was unanimous – yes please!! We ate al fresco again with great food and I think everyone enjoyed a beer (even me) as it was so hot!!!!
Back to the dock where there was another market place, filled with 'genuine imitation designer brands, including their favourite – Rolex'. I behaved again and saved a few more dollars. Such a pretty port and a very delightful sailaway……..
