DAY 29 - SATURDAY, 10 AUGUST 2013 CRETE

We arrived in the port of Aghios Nikolaos and have had a brilliant day – my descriptions won't do it justice….  We were greeted by our hosts, Lefteris & Elias, and set off in two taxis - 4 couples.  After explaining that we just wanted to see how the locals live, we headed off and soon stopped by a fruit stall where Lefteris bought a bag a sweet bananas to share, whilst continuing on our drive and watching mountain goats perched on craggy outcrops in the distance as well as beautiful coastal scenery and every 'shade of green' patchwork on the hills- which of course were made up of millions of olive trees, etc…..

A 'must see' and tourist spot we had to visit, was the Knossos Palace where we checked out the ruins – it was huge, historic and hot!!  But before leaving the car park, Lefteris produced a box of spinach pastries – yum, followed by fresh figs!!! We were then taken up into the hills to a family owned winery factory, Stilianou, where we tasted 3 vinos - a red, a white and a rosy – all delightful and also sampled beautiful olive oil with bread sticks and another tasty little savoury cake.  And yes, we purchased quite a few litres between us!!

Next to a typical village where we sat al fresco in a little eatery under the leafy foliage of mulberry vines and were treated to a super selection of delicious tomatoes, cucumbers, feta – all dripping with the lightest of olive oils – and there was another tasty bean dish that tasted better than it looked and a kind of soggy bruschetta, also very tasty.  The sweetest owner/lady/cook sat with us and was so happy that Joanne spoke the lingo, so they could chat together.

So many photos but which do we choose????.....

To be continued….
