DAY 36 - SATURDAY, 17 AUGUST 2013 SANTORINI, GREECE

What a spectacular view of the massive cliff of this beautiful island of Santorini and the homes built on top look like snow.  It's a tender day but we were saved the rumbling and screeching of releasing our tenders and were being taken ashore by private tenders.

As we got closer to the shore, I realized that I was going to have to do something that was looking a lot more challenging than I ever expected – and that was "ride a donkey literally up that cliff!!!".  Colin caught the cable car, which appeared almost as scary and we planned to meet at the top.

OMG!!  Before I knew it, I was trying to straddle this poor donkey and before I could think of anything else, except holding on very tightly, we were off, just him and me….  All I could think of was that I mustn't fall off as the cobblestone path was littered with you know what!!  Although the path criss crossed up the cliff, it was still reasonably steep and I never thought we would get to the top, but after about 10 minutes, I was game enough to look at the view and of course, it was quite spectacular looking down at the pretty port and the cruise ships anchored nearby.  All was going quite well, then about a dozen donkeys came charging back down on their own – they knew what they were doing, but I didn't.  That happened several times and it didn't get any less stressful, especially as a few people were also walking up and down….  I'm not sure how long the journey did take, it felt like an hour but was probably only about 20 minutes, but one thing is for sure, I was mighty glad to get off – with the help of a kind gentleman!!!

A strong coffee was needed - looking out at that view – and when I regained my composure, we ventured to the bus stop to catch a ride to Oia.  The trip took around 30 minutes weaving through the pretty countryside with holiday homes dotted along the way.  Oia is a  picturesque quaint little town of extremely narrow streets, hundreds of shops, cafés and restaurants with views that only the pictures can describe – I hope!!  Those white-washed buildings hanging on to the cliff face with the brightest of coloured patios, sun umbrellas and potted colour, against the blue of the ocean and the sky, is breathtaking.

This was a day I will never forget – glad I have crossed that donkey ride off my bucket list………. and we love you Santorini!!!!!
