DAY 56 - FRIDAY, 6 SEPTEMBER, 2013 - CANNES, FRANCE

What a spectacular view from the ship of the shoreline in Cannes, known as the Crown Jewel of the French Riviera and also famous for hosting the International Film Festival at the Palais des Festivals (which wasn't worth the photo as there was no red carpet and it is not a very pretty building!).  Fortunately there are no big sky-scrapers, just block after block of luxury hotels and expensive holiday apartments, etc., with classy boats drifting by and many more tied up closer to the shore.

Just did our own walkabout in Cannes today – it's nice just to get a feel for the towns/cities we dock at, if we haven't been here before.  After a quick tender trip to land, it was just a short walk into the city along the breakwater with hawkers selling hats and sunglasses.  A small beach was to our left and it looked very inviting and to our right was a lovely marina, probably filled to the brim with ridiculously expensive boats, but we couldn't see much as they have erected miles of small marquees in preparation for a big boating challenge next week.

We strolled through the streets and came to the most colourful and incredible fresh food market – absolutely everything you could think of was there on display…..  fresh fish, nuts, flowers, cheeses, meats and of course, fruit and vegies.  The size of the tomatoes had to be seen to be believed and I bet they tasted good too!!  Everything is also so cheap compared to our prices at home - not fair!

We took the one hour 'Petit Train de Cannes' ('little train tour') and we really enjoyed it – could never have done it on foot and the commentary was good too.  We choofed along the tree lined La Croisette Boulevard, ogling where the rich and famous holiday and passing the Carlton Hotel (where Grace Kelly stayed when she met Prince Reinier) – also able to catch a glimpse of the megga boats.  On through the posh street (Rue D'Antibes filled with luxury boutiques) we rode and then climbed Suquet Hill through the old residential area to the Church of Notre-Dame De L'Esperance at the top, for the scenic view over Cannes. Time for the return journey and from the train I was able to take a quick snap of a 'real' French Poodle – not able to get a better pic, but he was posing for me!!

Unfortunately the last tender was 3pm so there wasn't much time to do much else, except window shop – wasting time for lunch was not even considered – so it was more walking and then join the massive queue for the return tender, and then a very late lunch.

A beautiful sailaway today as we leave Cannes glistening in the sunshine.
