The alluring port of Split was built on a small peninsula alongside the finest natural harbour in the Adriatic, which made it the most important port in Dalmatia and Croatia's second largest city to Zagrab, the Capital.
It was a tender port and just a quick trip to shore. We decided to have an easy day and wander around the port area. On embarking the tender, we were pleasantly surprised to stroll along the wide and sprawling promenade, called the Riva, which was full lush palm trees, restaurants, cafés and shops – all very colourful and clean.
We ventured through the stone arch into the Old Town, again full of character and wonderful old buildings, where we discovered the Diocletian Palace, St. Domnius Cathedral, and beautiful Bell Tower along with a monumental courtyard filled to the brim with ogling tourists. Time for lunch, al fresco, whilst being serenaded!!
Strolling through the columns and ruins of days past we again wandered through the local markets flourishing with fruit and vegies - have never seen such huge grapes, blackberries, tomatoes, bananas etc., and the quality of the produce is amazing!!! More souvenir stalls as well, and as we had a few "Croatian Kuna" left in our pockets, just had to spend it on another little 'dress'!!!
An early sailaway today – 3pm, so the afternoon was spent up on deck in the sunshine and then it was back to the cabin for more homework – the blog!!! Still trying to catch up, but enjoying the challenge – so many great moments and memories. "Happy Birthday Russ" xx
