DAY 10 - MONDAY, 22 JULY 2013 LOMBOK

We arrived at the port of Lombok early this morning (neigbouring island of Bali), Indonesia.  It's capital is Mataram and the currency is Rupiah – R10,000 to $1!!!!!!  It's going to be fun shopping with all those millions!!

The morning began as we were rudely awoken around 7ish (yes, a reasonable time for a wake up call) with the screams and squeals of the tender boat, whilst it was being winched below our cabin – fortunately not too many tenders this trip – 3 to Venice.

Once ashore we teamed up with Meg, Mal, Anthea & Dennis and two other couples and hired a small van to take us around the sights.  We visited a pottery factory and although I vowed not to buy any sourvenirs this trip, I bought a nice hotplate/wall hanging whatever.  Next we visited a weaving village and enjoyed walking around their small humble dwellings and they certainly seemed to be very happy, especially the dear children.  We gave them some little Aussie kangaroo souvenirs which they enjoyed – we are sure 2 boys put them in their pocket and then said they didn't get one!!!!!

Back in the van and we continue dodging and weaving through the incredible multitude of bikes and scooters, trucks and buses – best not to watch!!!   We ended up just driving through Mataram and having a look at the busy town with meagre shop stalls and out of the blue, a huge modern shopping mall – we kept driving and were happy to get back to the ship in good time and happy with our scenic tour of pretty Lombok.

Photos:  Impressive statue of bullocks and a mosque in the background;  The 'little' horses and carriages used to taxi people around;  Happy kids;  Humble dwellings with TV and sterio system etc.;  Mal being shown how the rice is dried;  Rice paddies;  Super duper new shopping mall; and a picturesque village in a perfect location.

DAY 9 - 21 JULY 2013 SEA DAY

Sunday today and we'll spend the day sailing northwest towards Indonesia across the Indian Ocean and still lovely calm seas.  Not much on the agenda but we did look in on the extremely artistic fruit and vegetable crafters from the galley – how clever and quick they are.  It was held outside up on Deck 12, with a very attentive audience.

It was a super Sunday lunch in the dining room and then cards in the afternoon – come on boys, you'll have to pull your socks up!!!  Walk time and then spruce up for the evening.  Early show tonight to watch Trevor Knight's "Confession of a Folk Singer"….  with a slide show in the background with many of those great singers from the 60's…. great memories and really good songs!!!   Dinner and then back to Wheelhouse for a toe tapping good time and then nigh nighs…….

Photos:  Men at work;  Cute little penguins;  The most incredible creation – the detail extraordinary – too clever;  and their finished artwork.

DAY 8 - SATURDAY, 20 JULY 2013 SEA DAY

Sleeping far too well but as soon as we wake, it's time to get moving and organize the day……  early cards this morning with old friends from our last cruise to China & Japan – they threw a spanner in the wheel with a new version of Canasta -  but very enjoyable.  It's lunch time already – again preferring the Dining Room  - and then time for a little fresh air and sunshine.

We're now steaming towards Lombok at a good pace and will have our first port of call after leaving Australia, on Monday.  Dinner great as usual and then an early night after not having any luck in the Casino……..

DAY 7 - FRIDAY, 19 JULY 2013 SEA DAY

So fortunate that this weather just continues to be so delightful as we head across the Arafura Sea.  Getting into a real routine now with lazy sea days – cannot imagine what it's going to be like when we hit the Mediterranean and ports almost every day.

More lovely sunshine and the deck chairs are filling up very quickly -  the pool is full of ladies chatting and men trying to swim some laps!!!!

More cards this afternoon and the girls have a big win!!  Early 6.30 pm show this evening to enjoy Trevor Knight's rendition of John Denver's lovely music.  On to dinner, then had a look in on the Donna Campbell show in the Theatre, she is a great talent.  Also enjoyed the melodic tunes of Crimson Duo in the Wheelhouse, before heading off "upstairs"……
